Not all issues were raised, says tenants

In the story titled “Toilet War” in last week’s edition of the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror, the tenants are quoted as being unhappy with the fact that they do not have keys to all the toilets in the building. According to the article, the issue was resolved when new keys were cut and all tenants were given keys.

One of the tenants, Mr Eric Mafanedza, this week complained about the manner in which their message was portrayed in the newspaper and said the issue was never about the keys. “This was an issue about a lack of respect and discrimination,” he said.

Eric and another tenant, Mr Happy Mugobi, pointed out that the tension between tenants and the landlord had been building up for some time and boiled down to a complete lack of respect for the rights and dignity of the tenants. They say that previous efforts to try and address concerns with the landlord were unsuccessful and they were brushed off.

The tenants are convinced that the manner in which toilets were allocated also had a racial bias, which needed to be addressed. “We would like to encourage a healthy debate about such issues, so as to be able to move forward in our quest to promote respect for each other among all race groups,” Eric said.
