Death toll on local roads shows decrease

Date: 15 January 2015 By: Isabel Venter

Louis Trichardt roads saw a decrease in fatal road accidents during the 2014 festive season.

This good news is according to the manager of the Makhado Fire Station, Mr Jack Ramalatso. He said they responded to 31 call-outs, of which two were fatal. The newspaper spoke to him last week, shortly after he reported back for duty after the holiday season.

According to him, one pedestrian was killed while crossing the N1 north near Makhado Crossing, and three people in a massive pile-up accident near the Elim turn-off on the N1 south during the middle of December.

Compared to last year’s nine fatalities and 49 call-outs, Ramalatso said they were very pleased. He also expressed the hope that this declining trend will continue in the new year.

The rest of the province, however, was not as lucky.

Towards the end of December, the Limpopo MEC for Transport, Safety, Security and Liaison, Ms Mapula Mokaba Phukwana, raised her concern over the increase in the death toll on local roads. There were 138 crashes reported in Limpopo, which claimed the lives of a 116 people.

According to Phukwana, preliminary investigations have found that most of the accidents were a result of speeding, unsafe overtaking, inadequate observation before turning onto a road and driving under the influence of alcohol.
