Streets on track to be completed on time

Louis Trichardt is presently abuzz with activity as construction workers are busy refurbishing several of the town’s streets.

For years, residents had to endure driving on badly dilapidated streets, causing frustration and damage to vehicles. This prompted the Makhado Municipality to allocate R13,7 million for the refurbishment of several of the town’s worst-affected streets. Since March, work has started on these streets, which include Ruh, Celliers and Tshirululuni Street. The latest street to be ripped up to be refurbished is Hlanganani Street, with construction work starting last week.

Overall, residents seem to welcome the construction work, despite its causing minor inconvenience. Almost all the people the Zoutpansberger spoke to who live along streets currently under construction said they were willing to endure the discomfort as they would soon have decent streets to drive on again. They all had high praise for the contractors conducting the work, especially with regard to the quick pace at which the refurbishment project is taking place. “It also looks like they know what they are doing,” was the general feeling.

The Makhado Municipality's spokesperson was asked this week if all the current contracts were on schedule to be completed within the specified contract time. Judging by his response, it would seem that some of the contracts might be completed even sooner. In April this year, Bobodi stated that the completion date for Ruh Street would be in September. On Tuesday this week, however, he indicated a completion date of 14 August for Ruh Street, as well as Celliers Street. As for Tshirululuni and Hlanganani Street, the completion date is end of September this year. In all instances the contractor appointed for the refurbishment of the street is Mkhacane Construction.

Ask if any other streets in town were earmarked for refurbishment, Bobodi indicated that no other streets were to be refurbished under the current contract. This was not to say that no further refurbishment is to take place in the near future, but the indication is that this will be looked at upon the completion of the current project.
