Mother gives unborn baby a chance in life

Date: 24 September 2015 By: Isabel Venter

It is a rare occasion when something good is born out of a tragic situation.

Earlier this year, the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror reported about a shocking discovery that was made by a dog near the corner of Jeppe and Kort Street here in Louis Trichardt. On 12 May, the dog found and took the remains of a human foetus back to its home, after digging it up from a heap of rubbish in the open veld behind the municipal testing grounds.

At the time, the Makhado Police estimated the baby to have been between the ages of six and seven months old when it was aborted by its mother. Now, almost four months after the discovery, the police are still no closer to closing the case. Local police spokesperson Const Irene Radzilane confirmed this week that they have yet to make an arrest in the matter.

The article that was published, however, guided a young mother to saving her own unborn child. She contacted Past Leonie Mayfarth of the AFM Church here in Louis Trichardt, who had attended the crime scene of the aborted baby. Mayfarth, at the time, stood close by the baby’s remains and prayed for God’s intervention in the situation.

It took a couple of months, but her prayers were answered.

The young mother from Thohoyandou, who cannot be identified as she is still a minor, read the article in the Limpopo Mirror two months after it was published. She is still in her matric year of school and did not plan to fall pregnant.

Upon reading Mayfarth’s open invitation for desperate mothers to contact her, she did just that.

The mother was unsure of her options, but indicated that she planned to go through with the pregnancy and not have an abortion. After talking with Mayfarth, the mother was first advised to go to her nearest clinic, so that she can ensure a healthy pregnancy.

Unfortunately, there is still no local institution that can facilitate adoptions or take care of unwanted babies. Mayfarth therefore contacted Abba Adoptions in Polokwane to assist the young mother. Abba Adoptions forms part of the charity division of the AFM Churches in South Africa.

If all goes according to plan, the baby will be born healthy and will be adopted during December of this year.

“Even though this is just one life, it is one life that has been saved,” said Mayfarth. She repeated her invitation towards young mothers to contact her in their time of need. She can be contacted at Tel 084 219 4406. Alternatively, a young mother-to-be can approach her local church or clinic to be assisted.
