Local riders dominate Munnik Meerkat

Louis Trichardt mountain bikers this year dominated the 35km event of the annual Munnik Meerkat Mountain Bike Challenge which took place the past weekend.

For one biker, Kombo Bere, the race was a breeze. He flew over the finishing line of the 35km race, minutes ahead of his competition in a time of 01:16:14. His closest rival, Edwin Simpson, finished in second place in a time of 01:22:43, followed by Lachlan Truesdale in 01:22:46.

The first woman in this category was Soretha Lubbe in a time of 01:32:21, followed by Ashley Murray in 01:39:55 and Jernay McLeod third in 01:40:57.

This year’s gruelling 70km event attracted more than 70 die-hard cyclists. In the end, however, there could be only one winner, with top honours in the men’s race going to Alan Gordon, who completed the distance in a time of 02:58:53.

Minutes later, Mario Ferreira finished in second place in 03:10:16, followed by Alasdair Gernett in 03:13:45.

In the women’s race, it was a battle for first place between Louwrina Dando and Gretha Garnet, with Louwrina finishing just ahead of Gretha in a time of 03:56:39. Gretha’s time was 03:56:57.

hird place went to Dorothy Rood in a time of 04:01:57. In the 10km fun ride, the first boy home was Josua Retief, followed by Anthony Archer and Johan van den Heever. The first girl home was Leyla de Bruyn, followed by Anischka Neethling second and Nicola van Rooyen third.
