Nailbiter win for Vikings in 20/20 match

Date: 31 July 2015 By: Andries van Zyl

The Werda Toyota Vikings team won a nailbiter of a game against a strong Jolly team in the next round of matches in the Limpopo Dairy 20/20 cricket league the past weekend.

Jolly batted first and managed a decent 152 runs for the loss of six wickets in their 20-over spell. Top scorers with the bat were Nasir Raja with 31 runs off 28 balls and Sahil Patel with 19 runs off only eight balls. For the Vikings, the best bowlers were Leon Furstenburg, who took two wickets for the loss of 32 runs in four overs, and Shameel Govind, who took two for 37 in his four overs.

The Vikings fought hard throughout the match, only managing to score the winning runs from the last ball of the match. Good contributions were made with the bat by Craig Viljoen, who hit 38 runs off 37 balls, and Leon Furstenburg, who scored 24 runs off 16 balls. Jolly’s “almost win” was greatly because of top bowler Sahil Patel, who took four wickets for the loss of 46 runs in his four overs. Team mate Firdosh Baja took one wicket for the loss of only eight runs in his four overs.

In another match, it was an easy win for team GM against the Mustangs. GM won the toss and elected to bat first, putting a formidable score of 214 runs in 20 overs on the scoreboard. Top performers with the bat were Naheem Patel, with 61 runs off only 33 balls, and Christo Boshoff, with 44 runs off 27 balls.

There was, however, very little contest from the Mustangs, with the team being bowled out with only 49 runs on the scoreboard. Most devastating with the ball for GM was Johnathan Janse van Rensburg, who took four wickets for the loss of 16 runs in his four overs. Yaser Delawala supported him well, taking three wickets for the loss of 11 runs in three overs.

In the other games decided over the weekend, Jolly beat Limpopo Dairy on Saturday and went on to beat the Mustangs on Sunday. At the time of going to press, these games’ score cards were not available.

This coming weekend (2 August) the Vikings will face Lukeman on the A-field, and at 13:45 Lukeman will come up against GM, also on the A-field.
