Muthambi to remain in the hot chair?

Date: 09 November 2007 By: Nthambeleni Gabara

The faction supporting the municipal manager of the Makhado Municipality, Ms Faith Muthambi, emerged as winners when they walked out of a special council meeting held at the end of last month.

The council and its executive were divided into two camps over the renewal of the contract of Muthambi when it expires in February next year. Mayor Glory Mashaba’s faction was reported to be against the renewal of contract of Muthambi.

Earlier this year, the mayor’s camp wanted the municipal manager to be suspended for misappropriation of funds at the council, but a member of the executive council in Muthambi’s camp, Cllr Grace Nkanyane, defeated the proposal.

At another meeting, also attended by the mayor, Cllr Albert Muvhumbe from the mayor’s camp attempted to influence members of the Exco not to renew Muthambi’s contract, but it was opposed by another, Cllr Norman Mabila.

Both Mabila and Nkanyane are believed to be in Muthambi’s camp and they have since been demoted to ordinary councilors by the mayor when she reshuffled her executive council shortly after the floor-crossing window period.

During the special council meeting, Mirror learnt that Council took a resolution to extend Muthambi’s contract by five more years when it ends next year in February.

A member of the mayor’s faction, who requested to remain anonymous, said that council should also take a resolution to bring back the former directors of technical services and community services, Messrs Masindi Mapholi and Mr Peter Magwala. The contracts of the two former council directors were not renewed when they ended in August this year.

Through reliable sources, Mirror learnt that Mapholi is amongst those who will be shortlisted for the interviews for his previous position in the coming weeks.

A delighted member from Muthambi’s camp said that people should remember that, as a youth, Muthambi is unchallengeable, particularly by individuals coming from the disbanded civic association (Sanco).

Council spokesperson Louis Bobodi also confirmed that a resolution was taken to extend Muthambi’s contract by five years.
