Details:

A parade to commemorate the battle of Delville Wood will be held at the Moths’ Turbi Hills Shellhole on Sunday, 17 July.

More than 2 600 South African soldiers died or were wounded in the six days and five nights of ferocious fighting in this wood in the northeast of France. It lasted from the 15th to the 20th of July 1914 and went down in the history of WWI as an example of supreme sacrifice and heroism.

The service in Louis Trichardt will start at 11:00 and, after a short summary of the events at Delville Wood, memorial wreaths will be laid.

Local residents who had family members or close friends who were involved in this battle are welcome to participate in the event. For more information, Alan Odendaal can be contacted at 083 660 2472.
