The Thohoyandou Police on Wednesday disposed of more than half a million rand’s worth of illegal liquor in an effort to combat serious crimes.

The station commander, Col David Nemudzivhadi, led the operation together with his station management, the section head Col Schalk van Schalkwyk and Lt-Col Charles Mhlanga, and other key role players from the Limpopo Liquor Board. The Liquor Board’s members were led by director Dion Pelser.

Together they embarked on an operation, not only to close down illegal shebeens in the Vuwani area, but also to destroy the thousands of litres of illegal alcoholic beverages that were confiscated as a result of joint police clean-up operations.

According to the provincial police spokesperson, Lt-Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the task team oversaw the disposal of the alcohol valued at R532 180.74 The joint police operations also resulted in one liquor outlet owner in Vuwani being arrested.

The 57-year-old Khwara Nengwekhulu was charged with the selling of liquor without a license and found guilty by the Vuwani Magistrate Court and sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment or a fine of R5 000.

Ngoepe said that alcohol abuse is a leading cause of serious crimes like murder and assault in the Vuwani and Thohoyandou area. In these areas the alcohol is usually obtained from illegal taverns and sometimes even spaza shops.
