Faith’s fate still uncertain

Date: 03 August 2007 By: Linda van der Westhuizen

The expiry of the employment contract of the Makhado Municipality’s municipal manager, Ms Faith Muthambi sparked division in the executive committee of Council.

Councillor MN Mabila, seconded by Cllr TJ Mudau, proposed that the municipal manager’s contract "be extended by another period of two years in order that she could have five solid years as municipal manager".

Cllr MA Muvhumbe objected to the proposal and proposed that the contract not be renewed. This proposal was seconded by Cllr JF Smalle and Cllr PQ Reyneke, who went on to say "that the same principle for directors must be applicable", according to Council’s agenda of their meeting of July 26.

Official spokesperson Mr Peter Magwala said on July 31 that this matter had been referred to the next Council meeting. The matter was discussed under confidential items.

According to information, an ANC councillor reprimanded the ANC for a division in the Exco and for not sorting out their decisions in the Exco, where the ANC is in the majority.

Mr Magwala declined to comment on the aforesaid information.

Ms Mutambi’s contract expires in February 2008. She still does not know her fate.
