Local golfers had the opportunity to play in one of the country’s biggest amateur golf tournaments, the Sanlam Cancer Challenge, the past weekend.

The local golf challenge was hosted at the Soutpansberg Golf Club, and divisional winners qualified to participate in the Sanlam Regional Finals that will be played in August. The winner of each division at the regional finals will qualify for an all-expenses paid trip to the Sanlam Cancer Challenge Final being played in October at Sun City.

A total of 45 players gathered for Saturday’s field. In the men’s C-division, Corbet Machumela came first with 36 points. He was followed by Fanie Kotze in second place with 30 points and André Fogwell with 28 points in third.

The B-division was won by Thinus Pretorius with 41 points, Anton Pretorius with 38 in second place and André Leeb with 37 on a count out. Maarten Venter, local golf star, won the A-division with 44 points. Second in this division was Luan Fogwell with 36 points, followed by Johan Fouché in third with 35 points on a count out.

Sadly, the women’s division saw few entries this year. First in the B-division was Alicia Bezuidenhout with 37 points, followed by Elmarie Fogwell in second place with 25 points.
The A-division was won by the only entrant, Lezaan van der Merwe, with 40 points.
