Soutpansberg players excel at Limpopo Squash Champs

The Soutpansberg Squash Club in Louis Trichardt is celebrating as three of its junior players, Richter Myburgh, Iyaadh Aboobacker, and Elardus Barnard, competed at the Polokwane Squash Club in the Junior Limpopo Championships on 8 and 9 March. The talented Richter Myburgh secured a spot in the team to represent Limpopo at the SACD tournament later this year, while the club eagerly awaits news on the remaining players who might also be included in the team.

In addition to the junior excitement, the Polokwane Squash Club also hosted the senior Limpopo Championship the same weekend. Representing the Soutpansberg Squash Club were Heinrich Fletcher, Nardus Barnard, Erik Welman, Louise Lordan, and Ronel Welman. Erik Welman emerged triumphant for the second year, successfully defending his championship title in the men's section, while Louise Lordan secured third place in the women's division. Adding to the glory, Ronel Welman clinched second place in the women's division.

The club congratulated all participants on their achievements, highlighting their commitment to fostering talent and sportsmanship. As the club continues to nurture and support its players, the future of squash in the region appears brighter than ever before.

Andries van Zyl

Andries joined the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror in April 1993 as a darkroom assistant. Within a couple of months he moved over to the production side of the newspaper and eventually doubled as a reporter. In 1995 he left the newspaper group and travelled overseas for a couple of months. In 1996, Andries rejoined the Zoutpansberger as a reporter. In August 2002, he was appointed as News Editor of the Zoutpansberger, a position he holds until today.
